Austin sometimes thinks about what it would be like to be intimate with Robby, too. But when he is with Robby, although he professes and demonstrates his love, he never seems quite comfortable being alone with him in a sexual way. For example, after being beat up for being “queer,” Austin and Robby sit on a rooftop above Grasshopper Jungle and discuss what just happened. Robby asks Austin:
“Do you realize that today we got beaten up for being queers?”
“I know.”
”But you’re not a queer,” Robby offered.
“I don’t think so.”[25]
